The Problem

Authors increasingly cite webpages and other digital objects on = the=20 Internet, which can "disappear" overnight. In one study published = in the=20 journal Science, 13% of Internet references in scholarly = articles=20 were inactive after only 27 months. Another problem is that cited = webpages=20 may change, so that readers see something different than what the = citing=20 author saw. The problem of unstable webcitations and the lack of = routine=20 digital preservation of cited digital objects has been referred to = as an=20 issue "calling for an immediate response" by publishers and = authors [1].

An increasing number of editors and publishers ask that = authors, when=20 they cite a webpage, make a local copy of the cited = webpage/webmaterial,=20 and archive the cited URL in a system like = WebCite=C2=AE, to enable=20 readers permanent access to the cited material.

What is WebCite=C2=AE?

WebCite=C2=AE, a member of the International = Internet=20 Preservation Consortium, is an on-demand archiving system for=20 webreferences (cited webpages and websites, or other kinds of=20 Internet-accessible digital objects), which can be used by = authors,=20 editors, and publishers of scholarly papers and books, to ensure = that=20 cited webmaterial will remain available to readers in the future. = If cited=20 webreferences in journal articles, books etc. are not archived, = future=20 readers may encounter a "404 File Not Found" error when clicking = on a=20 cited URL. How does a WebCite=C2=AE-enhanced reference look = like?

A WebCite=C2=AE-enhanced reference contains the = traditional=20 elements of a reference (e.g. author and title of the cited = webpage, if=20 known), the cited URL, and a WebCite=C2=AE = URL.

There are two basic formats of a WebCite=C2=AE URL: = The opaque=20 and the transparent format - the former can be used to be = added to=20 a cited URL, the latter can be used to replace a cited URL. = Both=20 formats will be returned in response to an archiving request, = usually=20 initiated by the citing author.

The opaque URL is very short and handy, containing a short ID = like=20 5Kt3PxfFl (http://www.webcitation.org/5Kt3PxfFl). This format = should=20 only be used in a reference where the original URL is still = visible:

Alternatively, the cited URL and the cited date can be part of = a single=20 WebCite=C2=AE URL (the transparent format), making it = obsolete to=20 spell out the original URL. The drawback is that the = WebCite=C2=AE=20 URL can become pretty long:

These are just examples, the actual citation formats preferred = by=20 different editors may differ. Most style guides currently give = little or=20 no guidance on how to cite URLs and their archived version, but = most=20 editors will accept something along the lines of citing the = original URL=20 together with the archived URL in a submitted manuscript. It is = possible=20 to omit the archiving or "accessed on" date (which is recommended = in most=20 style guides when citing URLs), because WebCite=C2=AE = always tells=20 the reader when the snapshot was taken and in the transparent = format it=20 becomes part of the URL.

Another form of a WebCite=C2=AE link contains the = cited URL and=20 the DOI (Digital = Object=20 Identifier) of the citing document (refdoi):

This format is used by publishers who have implemented=20 WebCite=C2=AE (e.g. Biomed Central) by sending us their = citing=20 manuscripts shortly before or at publication (which our software = combs for=20 URLs which have not been archived by the citing author). A=20 WebCite=C2=AE URL containing a refdoi implies that a = snapshot of the=20 cited URL was taken when the citing paper (identified by its DOI) = was=20 published, and the archiving date of the snapshot retrieved by=20 WebCite=C2=AE if the reader clicks on this link will be = close to the=20 publishing date of the article. The example above is from the = citing paper=20 with the DOI 10.1186/jbiol36, = which cites=20 the URL http://imex.sourceforge.net (see reference 45).

A fourth way to retrieve a WebCite=C2=AE snapshot is = using a hash=20 sum (a sort of a digital fingerprint of a document), however, = citing a=20 document by URL and date is currently much more common than using = a=20 hash.

A fifth way is that WebCite=C2=AE may have (on = request of the=20 cited author/publisher) assigned a DOI to an archived snapshot, so = that=20 the link has the format http://dx.doi.org/10.2196/webcite.xx" = (where xxx=20 is the hash key of the material in WebCite=C2=AE). The = DOI resolver=20 at dx.doi.org (which is commonly also used to resolve cited = journal and=20 book references) would then resolve to a WebCite=C2=AE = page (or an=20 intermediary page pointing to the same work in other archives, to = other=20 manifestations such as print or pdf, or - in the case of online = preprints=20 - to "final" publications).

How do I use WebCite=C2=AE as a (citing) author to = archive=20 webpages I want to cite?

WebCite=C2=AE is an entirely free service for = authors who want to=20 cite webmaterial, regardless of what publication they are writing = for=20 (even if they are not listed as members).

The author of a citing manuscript can:

  • Either manually initiate the archiving of a single cited = webpage (by=20 using either the WebCite = bookmarklet or=20 the archive page)=20 and manually insert a citation to the permanently archived = webdocument=20 on webcitation.org in his manuscript, or;=20
  • Upload an entire citing manuscript to the WebCite server via = the comb page, = which=20 initiates the WebCite=C2=AE tool to comb through the = manuscript=20 and to archive all cited non-journal URLs. The = WebCite=C2=AE=20 software also replaces all URLs in the manuscript with a link to = the=20 permanently archived webdocument on webcitation.org. =

Readers can also search the WebCite database to see how a given = URL=20 looked like on a given date - provided somebody has cited that URL = on or=20 near that date. The date search is "fuzzy", i.e. the date does not = have to=20 match exactly the archiving date - we always retrieve the closest = copy and=20 give a warning if the dates do not match. A drop-down list on top = of the=20 frame with different dates tells readers that snapshots were taken = on=20 these dates. Select any of these dates to retrieve the respective=20 snapshot.
